Paper cutting is a traditional art that has evolved through-out the course of Chinese cultural development. Its origin should be closely connected with the invention of paper during the Han dynasty (206 B.C.-221 A.D.). As paper was highly precious in the early days, the art of paper cutting first became popular in the royal palaces and houses of nobility as a favorite pastime among court ladies. Later, during the 7th through 13th centuries, paper cutting was immensely popular during folk festivals and celebrations.

My process so far has been to organically create pieces that illustrate my private emotions, through abstract brush strokes and illustrations. Using strong lacerations, collaging, and dry brushing, I have so far created individual miniature pieces for a series. Each piece of the embodies emotions that I experienced past, present, and hope to experience. Ultimately,I wish to further my technique to further express myself.

Because I am very fluid, i need to set up rules. I have a very organized work schedule. I work every day, a certain number of hours. I don't have creative blocks: if it's going bad, it is just a bad day and I wind my way through. I push myself to stay on task and work. I do really large-scale paintings. The one I'm working on is nine by thirty feet. And somewhere in that landscape you get lost, completely lost, inside the body of a painting. You don't know where you're going, and it's not speaking to you, but you just keep moving through it. You find a space that looks familiar, and you make your home there for a little bit. And you don't get too comfortable because you've go to charge off again.

The artworks of Lee Ufan (Yi U-hwan), a prominent Korean artist who has been active mostly in Japan and Europe, are being featured in a large-scale retrospective exhibition, “Lee Ufan: Marking Infinity,” at the Guggenheim Museum in New York (June 24-September 28, 2011). The exhibition features 90 of his drawings, paintings, and sculptural works from the early 1960s through today.

“For me, artwork should make the viewers sense a higher, more distant, and larger world than they can see. It should open up a space and initiate viewers to experience a bigger world beyond their sight.”

He is an important artist and philosopher. His artworks and writings are unequaled in Minimalist and Post-Minimalist art. Being active mostly in Japan and Europe, he has hardly been introduced in the United States. The exhibition is overdue,” said Alexandra Munroe, Samsung Senior Curator of Asian Art at the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, who organized the retrospective. Four years in the making, the monumental event brings the works of a truly remarkable Korean-born artist to North American audiences for the first time. This kind of enthusiasm makes it clear why the Guggenheim chose to feature Lee Ufan’s artworks.

In my artwork I attempt to make sense of the physical objects around me by breaking them down and giving them an identity. By doing this I make it understandable in the same way that I could understand and read a person. I want to be able to look at my work, and see the outline of a story, to feel for this piece of art, and to fill in the blanks with imagination. I typically do this by following down one of two paths, mirroring what i see in society. I either make my art look shiny and new,using a pop art style with defined lines and specific shapes, or with a more abstract style, using lots of browns, blacks and frantic lines to portray a state of age and despair.

The piece above was left out in the snow for the weekend and then stained with coffee.

These are just some experimental pieces of mine, working with natural flow, bright colors, 3D shapes, and geometrical patterns. at some point i will collaborate the skills i have gained from these three different pieces, as well as the ones i have yet to create.

I'm working now with mixed materials. Starting with a water color base and then adding tissue paper and cray pas. I'm trying to make a series with similar materials and a color scheme. I was inspired by other images of water color. The color scheme was inspired by mountains, and ice, especially glaciers.

Process pieces

Well as you can see this is not the classical art of drawing in painting. In fact that is one of the points I gave it during the process of creation. To say I have a plan would imply that there is one, which at the moment it is to just see what happens and focus on the process, something Hom states many times during the day. The evolution of the these works, starting with a drawing and proceeding through the wood piece to that of the deranged circle, it has been a time of "what is something that I haven't seen done" and then make it even crazier. That is one of the fun parts of the process, between the nails, the ink, and the thread, what seems like chaos is actually not. To say I am trying is to do one thing is incorrect, I feel I am trying to see the limitless boundaries of the creative human mind and it's equal.

My process began with inspiration from nature. More specifically, I decided to focus on the movement of vines and weeds. I started my process pieces by mimicking the free growth of vine. I am continuing to add layers using ink, pen, and paint. I prefer to work in neutral colors as my work is inspired by nature. I do not have a clear idea for the finished products of these pieces just as nature has no limits.

I get my inspiration from other artists and nature. I try to draw expressively as if I were free from the rest of the world. I play with different 3-D structures in my paintings and create shadow forms from that. I try and experiment with taking away from my painting rather than adding to it by scratching out organic lines and shapes. Any suggestions with how to make my pieces finished?

So...not exactly sure what to say....so I will tell you where my inspiration came from:

Origami Balloons--> I used to make these when I was a child. They sometimes would cover Christmas lights. Also, relating to these paper lanterns is the Chinese Lantern Festival which I have always been amazed by. These lanterns floating in the sky relate to stars which overall relate to lighting. Industrial design has always been an interest to me and with this project I hope to explore this.

Dress--> There is a lot here. My mom used to make her own clothes when she was a teenager, but this never really inspired me. Not until last year when my friend made her own prom dress was I interested in fashion design. I had always loved pen and watercolor, but this summer was the first time I played with the form of dresses. I think I like to create these odd shapes because of dance, playing with a bodies shape in space. Also, I really love challenges and series. When I asked the rest of Art 4 to give me objects, it pushed me into creating this ordinary thing into something fashionably. This form creation also relates to my search for a costume for my independent study, but that is another topic.

For the past couple of weeks I've been experimenting with different materials and observing whether those mediums suit/fit my artistic style. Watercolor has been my second favorite medium after acrylic (on canvas). This piece portrays the use of really free and spontaneous brush strokes. Furthermore I used ink to add some contrast in the setting. I also have been looking through some images of nature, such as flowers, mushrooms, and the smallest/weirdest things found in the ocean. I've incorporated a small "thing" from the ocean in this painting which I hope to develop throughout the piece. Please feel free to post any comments/suggestions, I could really use your help :)

Recently I've been doing a lot of work with cut paper and some of the shadows that it creates. Also with the way cut paper shapes fit together. I'm having trouble on making it seem like it is cohesive. The pieces that I am working on all have something different in them and I was wondering if there was a good way to string them together. I have also been really interested in marbled paper and I haven't found a way to add to it.

Last year I was inspired by several abstract expressionist artists, and since then have focused on compositions with styles that blend abstraction with more definitive shapes and forms. I have experimented this year with brighter colors, but hope to return to a more neutral color palette (using beige greens, tans, black, and white). I enjoy working with broad, thick brush strokes and combining finer, more intricate designs, specifically those that communicate images of nature.

My process typically involves starting out with broad abstract gestures and then making out forms and structures with other media. I draw my inspiration from the world around me. Most of this inspiration comes from nature, where I have spent a great deal of my life. I am fascinated by the way all of these different natural elements interact, and am especially interested in decay and the interaction between humans and the natural world. I am now trying to figure out how i can communicate these messages through different materials and am interested in maybe adding sculptural elements to some of my pieces.

I want to keep my drawings as minimal as possible, as to not over-decorate and therefore making my drawing cluttered. I'm thinking of working on a series of penwork/random materials on cardboard. These two pieces are just experiments I guess because I usually don't do this kind of art. I'm not really yet sure what it expresses; they're pretty spontaneous in a way, so I'm just trying to find the deeper meaning in what I'm working on and how it will relate to me in personal way. Mrs. Hom suggested that I combine this kind of work with what I usually do and work with a larger area, like a big cardboard box, so I think I will continue with that!

After a year hiatus from this piece, I would like to thank my art students for helping me critique my work. I can finally say that I am satisfied with the piece. What a wonderful team effort !
